The Blessings of Nature (Skyrim walkthrough)
89The Blessings of Nature (Skyrim walkthrough).
In the town of Whiterun, you will meet Danica Pure-Spring, sitting underneath a burnt and destroyed tree outside the Temple of Kynareth. She will ask you if you could please help her repair the Gildergreen, which is the name of the large tree, by retrieving a magical sword called the Nettlebane.
Mission objectives:
- Retrieve Nettlebane
- Bring Nettlebane to Danica
- Retrieve Eldergleam sap
- Return to Danica
1. Retrieve Nettlebane
You will need to travel southwest to reach Orphan rock, where the Nettlebane is being kept in captivity of some vicious people. To reach orphan rock you should fast travel to Riverwood, and proceed from here on to foot. This will probably be your first encounter with the burnt village of Helgen after your adventure started in what was used to be an amazing and beautiful village. Reaching the gates of Helgen, and opening these by picklocking, you are met by hordes of bandits, pillaging the burnt corpses and going through anything which may have some value. Show them no mercy, and defeat them all. Nothing of real value has been left in the village of Helgen, so you might just as well proceed through the easternly gate, but proceed with caution... because you are about to face some mighty adversaries.
Proceeding through the eastern gate of Helgen, you follow the road towards Orphan rock. The first enemies you meet will be 2-3 witches which will attack you on sight. Use melee weapons and get close to them, as they are not wearing any armor, but some black mage robes. Before proceeding further you should make sure your health, magicka and stamina are all replenished and ready for battle.
Walking a little bit further you will now see a campfire and what looks like a big tent upon a cliff, this cliff is Orphan rock; it is guarded by 1 hag (basically, a more powerful witch) and 1 mighty hagraven (these are quite strong and can deal some major damage, so be careful). Hagravens are a mix of humans and vultures, possessing strong magical capabilties and strength. The hagraven is the creature you have to slay to retrieve the nettlebane.
2. Bring Nettlebane to Danica
After having slain the witches, hags and hagravens it is time to make your way back to Danica Pure-Spring again. You are most likely to find her in the temple of Kynareth, aiding ill- and wounded people. Once you have told her that you have retrieved the Nettlebane, Danica will reveal that the task is still not complete, for the Nettlebane is the only item which can be used to retrieve Eldergleam sap from the Eldergleam tree. The Eldergleam tree is the parent tree of the Gildergleen, from which its seed came.
3. Retrieve Eldergleam sap
Overhearing that you are venturing east to the Eldergleam, a pilgrim by the name of Maurice Jondrelle asks politely if he can join you in your quest; as he has always dream of seeing the Eldergleam up close. You have the option to bring him, or not. Unlike most other companions/followers Maurice can not be given armor- or better weapons; so you will have to protect him during your travels, but in my perspective and experience; he is quite useless.
As you venture far east you will come to Eldergleam sanctuary; the sanctuary is basically a big cave, filled with beautiful waterfalls and green plants. Sand, a pilgrim which have travelled far to see the sanctuary greets you as you enter, another person, Asta, tells you to please do not hurt the Eldergleam tree as nothing good will come of it... the way up to the Eldergleam tree is covered with tree roots, to make these move you have to hit them with the Nettlebane knife. The large branches will retract as you hit them, giving you passage up to the Eldergleam tree. Once at the Eldergleam tree, you can tap it for the Eldercleam sap. This is when nature revolts...
Several spriggons will appear around in the Eldergleam sanctuary, and you can hear Asta and Sand fighting a battle to the death with a large Spriggon Matron and a smaller Spriggon. If you want to save them you may run down the path and engage the Spriggons in close-quarter combat, drawing their attention to you instead of them.
After killing the spriggons, Maurice Jondrelle (if the useless pilgrim is still alive...) will leave your party. He will keep chanting: "It is so beautiful!" while staring at the Eldergleam tree. When I played he decided to attack me... I am unsure if this was due to me accidentally hitting him with a sword or if he was genuinely upset about me tapping the Eldergleam tree of sap.
4. Return to Danica
Final objective is to return to Danica Pure-Spring in Whiterun, but if you want some more action you should look a bit to the north-east... you will be engaged by not one, but two dragons in this area; and this is a good time to hide among the nearby mammoths and giants, fighting along side them against the dragons. I guarantee you an epic battle.
When you give the Eldergleam sap to Danica the mission The Blessings of Nature will be complete; and you will now be able to train restoration magic with Danica.
FAQ
Q - Is the Nettlebane a good weapon?
A - No, not really. It deals 11 damage, weighs 10 and is literally of no-value. Its main purpose is to be clear the passage to- and be used for tapping sap from the Eldergleam tree. It kind of looks cool though.

Just a quick note, if you talk to Maurice before nicking Eldergleam w/Nettlebane, you'll have an option to aquire what is needed w/o ticking off Mama Nature. This was the route I took.
I have talked to Danica Pure-Spring under the tree but i have not taken her up on her quest yet, reading your article has made think about doing it.
